Deanery Synod report

The NAPS Project, Kagera, Tanzania

Our visiting speaker this time at Deanery Synod was Judy Chisman. Judy is a qualified teacher who has worked in Ngara in our twin diocese of Kagera (north-west Tanzania). Ngara is the major town in western Kagera, near to the Diocesan offices and the Cathedral, and has a population of 10,000.

The Ngara Anglican Primary School started in the home of Frank Sebahene in 2004 with 8 pupils. Frank, who has visited our diocese, is currently studying for a Bachelor of Education degree elsewhere in Tanzania. He hopes to return to teach at Ngara. Though state education is available, there is a dire shortage of teachers. The Anglican schools (primary and secondary) have a much better ratio of teachers to pupils than the other schools.

Our diocesan project is to assist the NAPS on its new site outside the town. The project has already raised enough money to build 3 classrooms and an office, 2 toilet blocks, classroom furniture and a kitchen to provide school lunches. It is planned to include accommodation for boarders and libraries.

The NAPS children are taught in English to secondary school level. At this level, school is taught in English, so children who know it already are at a considerable advantage. This has of course made the school very popular, and the children want to learn!

The Anglican church has a large following and more churches are needed. The diocesan group also provides help for the pastors’ children, 70 of whom receive support for their secondary education. It is also hoped to assist in building/repairing church roofs, and to fund the supply of bicycles and motor bikes to help pastors get between churches.

Judy showed us an attractive illustrated booklet written by Frank Sebahene. This has been produced as an introduction to the diocese and Ngara Town in particular. It costs only £5 and would help to increase our understanding of the area. It would be wonderful to have a copy in every parish in our deanery!

Please send donations to the project! They should be made payable to St. Edmundsbury & Ipswich DBF and sent to the Diocesan Office in Ipswich.

St Nicholas' Hospice exhibition volunteer request

Bald Statements - 9 to 23 May 2009

As part of the celebrations to mark 25 years of the work of St Nicholas'
Hospice, an exhibition is being held at St John's Church which depicts
various responses to grief and loss, interpreted by sculptor Jean Parker.

This is the second request for volunteers to steward the exhibition which
will be open from 10-5 Monday to Saturday and 2-5pm on Sundays. Thank you to
those who have already volunteered, but more are needed.
If you think you can help, please contact Rosemary Clare.

There is a training session for volunteers on Wednesday 29th April at 6pm
at St Nicholas Hospice. Please contact Rosemary urgently if you think you
might be able to help out and can attend this training session.

With thanks
